Help.

Easylifeapp Search -- how to get rid of it?! Have tried everything.....

$

I seem to have been saddled with the Easylifeapp search malware, and can't get rid of it no matter what I try. I have tried uninstalling it through Add/Remove Programs -- the only problem is that it doesn't even appear there. I looked for information on Google as to what to do -- nothing worked (most hits I got involved using the Add/Remove Programs tool, and I said, that just didn't work for me.)

Finally, I decided, fine, I'll just wipe the hard drive completely. I'll do a clean install of Windows 8.1 and that should do the trick, right? It's always worked in the past!

Yeah....not this time. Seriously. I formatted (or reset, as Windows 8.1 puts it) the hard drive, but it didn't change a damn thing. I'm okay as long as I use Internet Explorer, but I despise IE and prefer Firefox or Chrome. As soon as I open either of those programs, two tabs open -- one with my set home page and one with this Easylifeapp search garbage. So obviously, my hopes of a reset doing the trick have been dashed.

I've run malware scans with Malwarebytes, and virus scans with Avast!, yet nothing shows up in either. I am at my wit's end. The Easylifeapp thing doesn't *seem* to be doing any visible harm, but I know it could be doing plenty that I just can't see. And the fact that I cannot seem to remove it is driving me crazy.

Here is my system info (please ignore the bit about the virus protection -- I am running Avast! Anti-Virus and it *is* active):

Download the enclosed file. (See below) Save it in the same location FRST is saved. Open FRST. Click on the Fix button and wait. The tool will produce a log, Fixlog.txt. Please post it in your next reply.

Lets try Combofix.

Please download ComboFix from Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
-----------------------------------------------------------
  1. Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
  2. Close any open browsers.
  3. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
    -----------------------------------------------------------
    • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
    • Click on this link or this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
    -----------------------------------------------------------
  4. Close any open browsers.
  5. WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
  6. Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
  7. If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.
    • Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
    • Install the Recovery Console if prompted.
    • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
    • Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" .
    • **Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**
Note: ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making it the default browser.
Note: Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CDs, floppies and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. Please do not install any new programs or update anything (always allow your antivirus/antispyware to update) unless told to do so while we are fixing your problem. If combofix alerts to a new version and offers to update, please let it. It is essential we always use the latest version.

Hi Nickoli.

Welcome to TSG!

Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool from here ( 32bit or 64bit ) and save it to your desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them. Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.

Right click to run as administrator. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
Press Scan button.
It will produce a log called (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run from.
Please copy and paste log back here.
The first time the tool is run, it makes also another log (Addition.txt). Please also paste that into your reply.

Lets see if we can get a command on an elevated state and run the System File Checker. Download the enclosed file. Save and extract its contents to the desktop. Once extracted click on the batch file therein and let me know the outcome.

Bootkit

Hi,

I haven't done much with the potentially infected Win 7 box as of yet. Have been busy investigating Qubes. Thanks for the research paper and the link to the tool.

I have just re-installed Win 8.1 on my spare box and discovered that the BCD file updated several times with new time stamps, but the file size has stayed the same. Some maybe it is the same for Win 7.

I have a clean pre-online image of the Win 7 box, I think I will just use that.

I still think the modification of my browsers were symptoms of an attack. Maybe it is not a bootkit and the BCD was not part of it, but it definitely is something that doesn't happen by itself. And now that it is clear that it is not a disk error nor memory problem, it points to some hacking going on.

Hello Jim,

Download the attached fixlist.txt file and save it to the Desktop.

NOTE. It's important that both files, FRST and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work.

NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system

Run FRST/FRST64 and press the Fix button just once and wait.
The tool will make a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt). Please post it to your reply.

Hello solaris9123,

Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool from here and save it to your desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them. Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.
  • Right click to run as administrator. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Press Scan button.
  • It will produce a log called (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run from.
  • Please copy and paste log back here.
  • The first time the tool is run, it makes also another log (Addition.txt). Please also paste that into your reply.

Computer working slow

First of all, I want to clear that it is my first post, so sorry if I forget some details or something.

I have a Lenovo laptopt with Windows XP, and worked perfectly. One day, when I turned it on it started to work extremely slow, when I clicked any programs it didn't open or it took a long time and the initiation was very slow too. I thought that it could only be a virus because it happened suddenly. Then, the next time I turned it on, the initiation was slow too and when I was about to reach that phase where I select the user and put the password, it appeared a message that I don't remember and then it said "hibernating". This never stopped, it continued until I got tired and turned it off. Now it go through that phase but it still works slow. I think it is a virus, but the McAfee doesn't detect anything, and it also works very slowly.

Thank you for your time, sorry for my english and for the excess or missing in details.

Dear all!!!

I have been facing this issue for close to two weeks. Tried some of the steps that was available online. Part of it was rectified. But my browser is bogged down by the pop ups possibly due to this annoying MY START SEARCH malware.

I am an amateur musician who used to try new VSTi uploaded in some websites. Yes I must admit, I cannot spend much. So I look out for cracked music softwares. When I tried to download a VSTi from a file sharing website, I accidentally downloaded something and my browser was automatically changed to MY START SEARCH homepage.

I tried several things. Scanned with Malwarebytes and Spybot..Nothing helped. Finally I read somewhere that ADWcleaner is effective. I tried it and my browser was back to normal. My homepages are no more hijacked or redirected.

But off late, whenever i try to visit some websites, i get the annoying popups (3 popups) in the bottom of the browser window and they keep on coming. These pop ups are so similar of the one that i experienced when my system was affected with MY START SEARCH malware.

Now i observed that my system is also infected with innoapp malware. I am helpless. Please help me.. Thanks for any help...
