Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.

Note: You need to download and run the 64 bit version
  • Right click to run as administrator. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Press Scan button.
  • It will produce a log called FRST.txt in the same directory the tool is run from.
  • Please copy and paste log back here.
  • The first time the tool is run it generates another log (Addition.txt - also located in the same directory as FRST.exe/FRST64.exe). Please also paste that along with the FRST.txt into your reply.

It is not a waste of time
2 antiviruses or security programs or parts of them can cause all sorts of strange behaviour.
Norton however is known to cause all sorts of weird and wonderful actions or problems on windows 8
When you install any security suite/antivirus of firewall, The installation is supposed to disable the inbuilt defender & windows firewall. For some reason, I have lost count of the number of times that I have seen Not=rton install & not disable Defender & Windows Firewall. So causing weird behaviour

Installed something. Now having problems

Hello, THe operating system is Windows 7 HOme Premium Service Pack 1 64 bit. The browser keeps changing the homepage being redirected even after i removed malware with adware, junk removal tool, malwarebytes, Ccleaner, There are many applications in the service log that are stopped and are required to be running. When I try to restart through task manager or computer management i get an access denied message. I tried changing it as administrator and I got the same message. Sometimes for no reason the laptop shuts off. My Startup file is empty and I am unable to find startup repair to run it and help fix or diagnose the problems. Also when i ran a chkdsk I got a message that there were corrupted files that could not be repaired. I ran the hijack this and need help analyzing it. Thanking you sincerely,

if a computer got infected and was 'encrypting' files on a share
is there any way to determine which computer it was coming from, if i can get onto the server with those shares ?
( i have backups, so not worried about restoring them, just would like to know which computer is doing it ) fast....
instead of trying to "go to each one indivudually"

PC is uploading at 1MB/s almost continually with no applications open

Apologies, there is a typo in my previous post. The upload peaks at 1.3 Mb/s not MB/s as reported originally. At this level, I don't understand why the router should struggle. I'm more concerned about potential malware though.

happy face squares

Hello all,
I have these weird happy face squares that keep showing up on my screen, on browser windows and on documents. If I open a document and move my mouse over where the squares are they disappear, but they keep coming back. I haven't downloaded anything weird and every time I run a scan it says I have 0 viruses. I tried reinitializing my computer which seemed to work for a while, but now they're back. They always seem to show up first on Facebook if that helps. I've attached a screen shot of what they look like on a word document.

Don't know if I have a virus or not but when I tried to put in my password to open windows today it was already filled in with a long password, my password is only 10 letters long, and when I hit enter it would say wrong password. After trying about 5 or 6 times it finally let me type in my password. Now I'm afraid to shut off this pc thinking I may not be able to get it back on, machine is only a month old ! This is the first time this problem has happened. Just ran AVG scan and it came back as no threats. Is this just an 8.1 glitch or do I have a virus problem ? Another strange thing that happened recently just before my windows 7 died was I couldn't type my windows password into the password space, couldn't see any cursor, but if I took the pc downstairs to the main floor I finally found it worked just fine downstairs but if I took the pc back upstairs I couldn't type in a pass word again, to fix the problem I just removed the password window but the windows died right after that. but thats one for the books !!

can anybody help me please

My internet browser keeps lagging and freezing up on me and I am wondering if it is because of malware. I just did a virus scan and a malware scan but it didn't come back with much. Not sure what to do but here are my specs and stuff.

Got scam call, wasn't offered anything

$

I got a scam call from 210-249-0540 with "Novatel" on the ID. Later upon being questioned, he gave 855-674-1190 as the call back number, and ameriweebly.com as his website, though I would never actually go on any website he'd give me.

The scammer claimed to be connected with Microsoft and that he sees many errors on my internet connection since someone's trying to hack it, etc. etc. blah blah blah. I kept on questioning him and he obviously couldn't tell me which computer of mine he "sees the errors on" but that I should go to any Microsoft computer. Knowing already in advance but playing along with him, I let him lead me to the Event Viewer and seeing all the errors that obviously are there, and him using that as proof to his bogus claims. I asked him the event name that he sees as a error, and he made something up that I told him I don't see in my Event Viewer list. Then, instead of trying to sell me his service of "repairing" the "errors", or directing me to download his malware onto my computer (as I've seen online in other people's accounts), he just told me to take my computer to a Microsoft outlet to have the issues fixed, and that was it.

I'm wondering what could his goal be in calling me if he didn't actually offer me any service or tell me to go to any website, it doesn't seem like he gained anything from calling by just showing me his "proof" in the event viewer and than telling me to go have my computer fixed. Could there be something else he accomplished that I'm not aware of, even though I didn't go to any website while speaking with him, does anyone have any ideas? (And is it in any way possible for him to have sent me malware/spyware even without me going to any website?)

(After posting this thread I realized that it was accidentally posted in the wrong section, I meant to post it in "General Security". I hope it can be moved.)

Mouse clicks, drags and selects automatically

Hi again! I've had a problem with my built in laptop mouse for several months. It wants to right-click, select items (turns everything blue), drag stuff and drop it who-knows-where, let go of things I'm trying to drag and sometimes it simply stops working altogether. I've adjusted the settings several times, but it doesn't make any difference. The geek squad at Best Buy said it was a virus and for $200 they would remove it. What does anyone else think?

Hello all, it's been a long while since I've posted here because thankfully I've been (mostly) problem-free for the last few years. Much thanks to those who assisted me back then.

Lately though, I've been having an issue I would describe as "consistently annoying" or "annoyingly consistent". This is a Dell laptop and every once in a while (feels like every two weeks roughly), I'll wake it from sleep mode and my Google Chrome browser will immediately close out. I will open it again and it will within 10-15 seconds close out again while trying to "restore" my session. Repeated attempts will also close down without fail, but in quicker intervals (sometimes 3-5 seconds).

This has happened three times and each time I didn't know what it was. I tried a quick scan and nothing came up. I checked my add/remove program list and didn't see anything out of the ordinary that might be a culprit. Instead, to resolve the problem I merely did a system restore. All three times I've resorted to this and so far, all three times it has worked, except for the problem eventually coming back within two weeks or so.

Any idea what could be causing this? I'm thinking it must be malware, but I suppose anything is possible. I have not tested any other web browser which I should have done last time but didn't think of it. I would not call this a serious issue, just annoying. Regardless, any help would be greatly appreciated!

Did you install Microsoft Security essentials or ESET?
Double click Frst64.exe to launch it.
FRST64 will start to run.
  • When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Press the Scan button.
  • When finished scanning,a log will open on your Desktop, FRST.txt
  • Please post it in your next reply.
If you lose track of it, it will be saved in the same location as FRST64.exe
