Adchoices Banner, and App disappearing

Suddenly, tonight when I switched on the computer, my email had a big ad banner at the top of it which could not be removed (see picture attached). I am not very expert, but searched the web and found a recommendation to run adwcleaner in safe mode, which I did, but when it rebooted again, it was still there. Same after running a Malwarebytes scan.

Then, I tried to open a file in Kingsoft Office, which I had been looking at minutes earlier, and I was told that Kingsoft Office was no longer on my computer, and the shortcuts at the bottom of the screen were greyed out and did not work.

Can someone please help before more things go wrong.....?

Declined to let someone else asked to use my computer to download something because their computer was infected. To my knowledge they didn't use the computer but now I am not sure. We do not share files or anything on this laptop or usb drives. Three days ago out of the blue my system seemed slow, didn't see any changed files or anything. Ran Microsoft security scan.

I am suspicious because suddenly I have issues with things loading on the computer. Notices that I am not connected to the internet when I am and things run very slow on start up and anytime I am looking to open, save something it takes forever.

After a few shut downs and running my scans for spyware and malware bytes with safemode on....the computer ran okay.

But today (day 3) I am seeing files from recent programs and recent files going missing and I have not cleared anything.

Last night I ran Spybot Search and Destroy 2, Malware Bytes Anti Malware, Spybot search and destroy, all are updated versions. They removed "minimal threats, tracking cookies", but no malware or anything with a high threat found.

Win32/VB.NGY trojan (made folders disappear on an external drive)

$

Hi!

A friend of mine came to me with his infected, external Seagate hard disk drive after using it to store all the photos and footage from his trip in South Asia now recently. The problem first occurred when he connected the HD to one of the computers at an internet café in Vietnam.

After transferring the files from the camera to the portable HD, both the SD card and the HD got infected by a trojan. He told me that the camera went mental after putting the SD-card back in the camera, so he had to reformat it. Then, all of a sudden, duplicates of several folders began to appear on the HD. Double-clicking on either the original folder or the duplicate, just made the folders disappear, but both he and I checked the space available on the disk volume, and it's still correct - as if the folders still are there. The weird thing is that they don't show up on neither Windows or Mac, even with "show hidden folders" ticked off.

I connected the HD to my laptop and watched as ESET NOD32 scanned through the drive, and it came up with this:

I saw it scan through the files and folders that are missing as well. I did another in depth scan with NOD32, but it turned out clean. I also did a full system scan with Spybot, but it didn't find anything. The folders that disappeared in the first place are still missing.

Info about the computer I am using to solve this problem:

HELP! I have a jRat!

$

It could be that one of the things combo removed was the jrat
I just wasn't sure
If it has gone, then don't worry
if it comes back then run FRST & post the logs

*Follow these steps to uninstall Combofix and the other tools it downloaded to remove the malware*
* Click START then RUN
* Now type Combofix /Uninstall in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the /U, it needs to be there.

This will also purge the restore folder and clear any malware that has been put in there. Now Empty Recycle bin on desktop Then reboot.

go here http://myonlinesecurity.co.uk/how-to...hten-security/ for info on how to tighten your security settings and how to help prevent future attacks.

and scan here http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal for out of date & vulnerable common applications on your computer and update whatever it suggests.

Then pay an urgent visit to windows update & make sure you are fully updated, that will help to plug the security holes that let these pests on in the first place. If windows update doesn't work, please come back & tell us

Hi baleguy,
While we work, please don't install, uninstall, or scan with anything unless I ask, until we are through cleaning. Thanks.
----------------------------------------------
Download and Run Temp File Cleaner (TFC.exe)
Download Temp File Cleaner and save it to your desktop.
You might want to Save any unsaved work. TFC will close ALL open programs... including your browser!
Right click the TFC icon and choose Run as administrator.
If you have a lot of junk files to remove, it could take a while, so please be patient and let it finish.
When it's done, it will report the total size of files removed. If it asks to Reboot, choose to do so. This will remove files that could not be removed while Windows was running.
After Restart, log back in to your usual account.
You can keep TFC on your desktop and run it every week or two to clean out excessive temporary files. It does usually require a restart.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Download and Run the Farbar Scan Tool
  • Download FRST64 and save to your Desktop.
  • Double click Frst64.exe to launch it.
  • FRST64 will start to run.
    • When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
    • Press the Scan button.
    • When finished scanning, 2 logs will open on your Desktop, FRST.txt and Addition.txt
    • Please post them in your next reply.
If you lose track of them, they will be saved in the same location as FRST64.exe
Feel free to use separate replies if it's more convenient.

Hi Derek. Thank you for your reply All boxes in LAN Settings are unchecked'

Unfortunately, as I said in my post, I have no browser. IE10 has disappeared, not in program lists.

However, there is a connection which Windows is using to update Weather, MSN News etc, but I have no access to the internet.

Hello; please be patient with me. This is my mom's Windows 8 laptop which I know nothing about. This is running Firefox v38.0.5. OK, so far I seem to have solved the issue.

I ran CHKDSK on my C: drive, which took most of the day to complete, and the freezing up seems to be no longer there. There were some issues with broken files but everything was repaired and put back together again.

I will get back to the forum if I face any further freezing up issues.

Thanks!!!!
